ATR Aims to Fly Hybrid-Electric Regional Aircraft by 2030

Franco-Italian turboprop manufacturer ATR has announced that it will lead two EU-funded Clean Aviation projects with the goal of flying the world’s first hybrid-electric regional aircraft by 2030.

The company plans to use an ATR 72-600 as a test platform, integrating hybrid-electric propulsion, high-performance batteries, and a thermal engine capable of operating on 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Flight testing will be carried out under the DEMETRA program.

The initiative aligns with Clean Aviation’s Ultra-Efficient Regional Aircraft concept, which targets a 50–100 seat aircraft with a range of up to 500 nautical miles, a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions, and full SAF compatibility.
