Airbus A220 Dismantled for Parts: Young Jet Type Enters Teardown Phase for the First Time

One of the world’s youngest passenger aircraft models, the Airbus A220, has entered the dismantling phase for the first time to be used as a source of spare parts. A subsidiary of Delta Air Lines has begun the disassembly process of an A220-300 aircraft formerly operated by EgyptAir and owned by leasing company Azorra.

The aircraft will be used to support Delta and other A220 operators with spare parts. Its Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared turbofan engines are also being leased to Delta by Azorra.

PW1500G engines continue to present challenges for A220 operators, mirroring the issues experienced by PW1100G engine users in the A320neo family.

Azorra stated that they were the first to propose this method for the A220-300, which was originally introduced to the market as the Bombardier CS300 in 2016.

There are currently over 450 Airbus A220 aircraft in active service globally, the majority being the larger-capacity A220-300 variant. More than 350 of these jets are six years old or younger.
