US Targets July 4th Deployment for Qatar-Gifted Jet as Air Force One

The U.S. Air Force is aiming for a Fourth of July delivery for a Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar, intended to join the presidential fleet in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary. The aircraft, which was accepted by the White House in 2025, has undergone extensive upgrades to meet presidential standards.
Retrofitting and Security Upgrades
The modification process, managed by L3Harris, included significant security enhancements, communication system improvements, and advanced defensive capabilities. According to an Air Force spokesperson, the aircraft has successfully completed its flight testing phase and is currently in the painting stage. While the July 4th deadline remains the primary target, efforts are being made to potentially deliver the jet as early as June 14th.
Delays in Official Replacement Program
The delivery of this gifted aircraft comes as the official Air Force One replacement program, led by Boeing, faces continued delays. The conversion of two other 747-8 aircraft into the VC-25B configuration is currently four years behind schedule, with expected delivery pushed to mid-2028. Boeing has reported over $2.4 billion in charges related to the project as total costs have risen above $5 billion.
New Livery and Fleet Updates
The new aircraft will feature a revised paint scheme consisting of red, white, dark blue, and gold. This livery will eventually be applied to the entire executive airlift fleet, including the VC-25B and four Boeing 757-200s used by senior officials. Additionally, the Air Force recently acquired two former Lufthansa 747-8i aircraft to serve as a dedicated trainer and a source for spare parts to support the aging current fleet.
