Cause of Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Nose Gear Collapse Identified

Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) has released an interim report into the collapse of the nose landing gear on a Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 at Frankfurt Airport on June 4, 2026.

According to the report, the aircraft was parked at the time of the incident. Two maintenance technicians in the cockpit were carrying out a test to resolve an open maintenance item related to the main landing gear door control system. As part of the test procedure, the landing gear lever had to be moved to the “UP” position.

At approximately 10:45 UTC, the nose landing gear retracted immediately after the lever was selected to “UP”. The forward fuselage then struck the ground and sustained damage.

The BFU identified the absence of the lower locking pin on the nose landing gear as one of the key factors in the incident. Investigators later found the pin inside a storage box in the aircraft’s avionics compartment.

The technical investigation and the final accident report remain ongoing.
