Two Delta Air Lines aircraft came dangerously close to each other during a go-around at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, prompting an investigation by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Delta flight DL1568, arriving in Atlanta from Pittsburgh, initiated a go-around after another aircraft failed to vacate the runway in time. At the same time, Delta flight DL2472 was taking off for Rochester, triggering Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) alerts on both aircraft.
Air traffic controllers instructed the crews to separate, and the aircraft moved safely away from each other. According to available data, they came within approximately 1,800 feet horizontally and 600 feet vertically at their closest point.
No injuries were reported, and flight DL1568 later landed safely. The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident, while Delta Air Lines said it would cooperate with the authorities.
