
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) published its 2025 Annual Safety Report, confirming that aviation remains one of the safest modes of long-haul travel. Overall, 2025 demonstrated strong safety performance.
According to the report, the global accident rate was 1.32 per million flights in 2025, an improvement from 1.42 in 2024 but slightly above the 2021–2025 five-year average of 1.27.
A total of 38.7 million flights were operated worldwide in 2025, resulting in 51 accidents, down from 54 in 2024 but above the five-year average of 44. Of these, 8 were fatal accidents, compared with 7 in 2024.
The report also noted that 394 lives were lost in 2025, higher than the 244 fatalities reported in 2024 and the five-year average of 198.
