Finnair is evaluating the possibility of ordering up to 30 Airbus narrowbody aircraft as part of its fleet renewal strategy and efforts to strengthen its position in the European market. Chief Executive Officer Turkka Kuusisto stated that discussions remain in the early stages, with a final decision expected by the end of the year.
The airline’s current fleet includes various Airbus models, but the presence of aging aircraft has prompted consideration of replacements. In light of rising competition and new environmental regulations, a narrowbody order could play a key role in improving both operational efficiency and passenger comfort.
Finnair’s last major Airbus deal was for 19 A350-900s, of which 18 have already been delivered. Despite ongoing financial challenges, management sees a narrowbody order as an important step toward long-term stability.
The preference for Airbus reflects Finnair’s strategic priorities. The A320neo family offers significant fuel efficiency gains and reduced emissions, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals. Finnair’s long-standing relationship with Airbus further underscores its intent to maintain and deepen this strategic partnership.
