IATA Highlights the Growing Importance of the Human Factor in Aviation Safety

Ahead of the IATA World Safety and Operations Conference, where AirwayBuzz is a Gold Media Partner, IATA Global Director of Safety Mark Searle said that despite the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and automation across aviation, the human factor continues to remain at the core of safety. Searle noted that technology provides significant support in areas such as risk identification, maintenance, flight operations, safety management and emergency response planning, but emphasized that people remain responsible for interpreting information, making decisions and intervening when necessary.

This approach will also form one of the main themes of the conference, which will be held in Istanbul from October 6 to 8. Under the theme “Performance Through People: Strengthening Safety, Operational Agility and Crisis Response,” the event will examine the evolving roles of pilots, engineers, maintenance technicians, air traffic controllers, cabin crew, dispatchers and safety professionals alongside advancing technologies. The impact of geopolitical developments, runway incursions, severe weather events and emerging technologies on operations will also be discussed.

Searle stressed that aviation professionals must not only be able to use technology, but also retain the expertise required to question assessments generated by artificial intelligence and intervene in automated systems when necessary. The conference will also address topics including human-centered safety, talent development, crisis management, mental health, emergency response planning and the development of the next generation of safety leaders. According to IATA, while technology will continue to play an important role in the future of aviation, human expertise will remain the key factor determining how these tools are used.
