WestJet, Canada’s second-largest airline, has begun gradually reducing its operations ahead of a planned cabin crew strike. The carrier said it has cancelled a total of 276 flights so far in an effort to limit the impact of a potential work stoppage.
WestJet management said approximately 35,000 passengers had been affected by the cancellations. The airline added that negotiations with the union were continuing and that efforts were being made to reach an agreement before the strike begins.
The union representing the cabin crew said no progress had been made on its demands regarding pay and working conditions.
WestJet advised passengers to check their travel plans and consider alternative booking options, warning that further cancellations could follow if the strike goes ahead.
