Challenging Evacuation Operation at -43°C in Antarctica

The Australian aviation company Skytraders carried out a difficult medical evacuation operation to transport a person suffering from a serious medical condition at the McMurdo Research Station in Antarctica.

For the mission, Skytraders’ Airbus A319LR aircraft, named “Snowbird 1,” was prepared for a medical evacuation mission within 24 hours of receiving the call. Due to adverse weather conditions, the team waited for approximately 12 hours before departing from Hobart, Australia, on July 31.

After a flight of about 5.5 hours, the aircraft reached McMurdo Station and landed on an ice runway in complete darkness, under conditions where temperatures had dropped to as low as -43°C. After the patient was taken on board, the team departed Antarctica before the weather was expected to deteriorate further and flew to Christchurch, New Zealand. The patient was reported to have been admitted for treatment there. (Herald Sun)

Captain Al Wallach, who led the operation, stated that winter operations in Antarctica significantly increase flight complexity and that the conditions they faced were close to the operational limits of specially prepared aircraft. (The Australian)
