Mandatory Drug Testing for All Pilots at Malaysia Airlines
Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has decided to introduce mandatory drug screening for all 1,260 pilots serving at Malaysia Airlines, following the arrest of one of its second officers in Indonesia over an alleged drug-smuggling attempt.
According to the company’s statement, pilots must complete the screening by 15 August. Those who fail to be tested by that date will be removed from flight duties until the process is completed. MAG will also expand its existing random testing programme, making drug testing mandatory for all active pilots; the practice is planned to cover cabin crew as well in the period ahead.
The second officer arrested in the incident was reportedly travelling as an observer rather than as part of the operating flight crew. MAG confirmed that the aircraft was flown safely by two qualified pilots.
The company stressed that the measure reflects the aviation industry’s zero-tolerance approach to illicit drugs and is significant in terms of crew fitness, operational integrity and maintaining public confidence in air travel.
