Malaysia Airlines Pilot Detained in Indonesia on Drug Smuggling Charges

Indonesian police have detained a 39-year-old Malaysia Airlines pilot on suspicion of attempting to smuggle more than 26 kilograms of ecstasy and a package of methamphetamine into the country following flight MH727 from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta.

The drugs were discovered inside a suitcase flagged as suspicious during baggage screening at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Eko Hadi Santoso, Director of Narcotics Crime at the Indonesian National Police, said the pilot had been formally named a suspect and placed under arrest. He added that the investigation was continuing to identify the wider drug network behind the case.

Authorities said the suitcase contained around 70,000 ecstasy tablets and methamphetamine. The pilot also reportedly tested positive for several prohibited substances during a drug screening.

Malaysia Airlines said it was cooperating with Indonesian authorities and had launched an internal investigation into the incident.
