NATO Moves Toward Multinational A400M Fleet

NATO allies Belgium, Croatia, France, Poland, Spain, Türkiye and the United Kingdom have launched a High Visibility Project for the Airbus A400M during the NATO Summit Defence Forum in Ankara.
The initiative aims to address strategic airlift capability gaps in Europe through a multinational fleet built around the Airbus A400M. Based on a pooling and sharing model, the project may include joint ownership and operation, as well as cooperation in maintenance, training, infrastructure and procurement.
The planned framework is designed to support national and NATO requirements while improving operational flexibility in areas such as air-to-air refuelling, disaster relief, medical evacuation and firefighting.
Airbus Defence and Space UK Chairman Ben Bridge said the selection of the A400M highlights the aircraft’s strategic airlift role. More than 135 A400M aircraft are currently in operation worldwide, with the global fleet exceeding 270,000 flight hours.
The initiative follows the model of the Multinational MRTT Fleet, which operates Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft under a NATO-owned pooling arrangement.
NATO also announced that Finland has officially joined the Multinational MRTT Fleet. With Finland’s participation, the programme now includes nine nations: the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Czechia, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
