Frontier and JetBlue Benefit Most from Spirit Airlines Exit

The withdrawal of Spirit Airlines from the market following the suspension of its operations on May 2 has primarily benefited Frontier Airlines and JetBlue Airways, both of which had previously explored merger opportunities with Spirit.
Following Spirit’s shutdown, both airlines moved quickly to increase capacity on routes previously operated by the carrier. New scheduling activity has been particularly noticeable in key markets such as Fort Lauderdale and Chicago.
Frontier launched 15 additional daily flights across 18 routes formerly served by Spirit, while JetBlue introduced 11 new nonstop routes and increased frequencies from Fort Lauderdale.
Both airlines have also faced financial pressure in recent periods. Their earlier interest in merging with Spirit had been viewed as an effort to gain scale and strengthen competitiveness within the highly competitive U.S. aviation market.
Meanwhile, rising jet fuel costs continue to place pressure on small and medium-sized airlines. Industry observers note that as airline products and services become increasingly similar, passengers are showing a growing preference for larger network carriers.
