United CEO: Merger Attempt with American Airlines Falls Through

Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, stated that recent merger discussions with American Airlines did not progress after American declined to engage.

Kirby noted that the idea of a merger was his own initiative, emphasizing that the plan differed from past industry consolidations by focusing not on cost-cutting, but on growth and improving the customer experience.

He highlighted potential benefits such as a broader network, enhanced loyalty programs, and increased access to destinations. Kirby also argued that such a merger could create a more globally competitive U.S.-based airline, contributing to employment and economic growth while strengthening its position in international markets.

With American Airlines not supporting the proposal, the merger is considered off the table for now, and United Airlines will continue to pursue its standalone growth strategy.
