Airport Operator Aena Floats €39.7 Million Tender for Madrid-Barajas Runway Regeneration

Airport operator Aena has approved a budget of €39,768,485 for the renovation of runway 18R-36L at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. The project includes the repaving of the runway and its headland, as well as the construction of new pipe banks and the laying of new cabling for associated systems.

During the regeneration works, which also involve replacing halogen lights and reinstalling existing LED lights, only runway 18L-36R will remain available for operations.

Operational Planning and Execution Timeline

The execution of these works involves the closure of the runway for a period of 47 days in 2027, with a total project completion timeframe of twelve months. Coordination is being maintained with airlines and all involved agents to minimize the impact on airport operations.

The project includes the following technical actions:

  • Sealing cracks in the pavement.
  • Construction of fast access roads to runway 18R-36L.
  • Resurfacing and lighting works on taxiways Z1-Z14 associated with runway 18R-36L.

Flight planning has been adjusted to allow airlines to adapt their schedules to the limitations imposed by these improvements. These actions are part of the ongoing infrastructure enhancement process, certified according to EU Regulation 139/2014, which sets technical and operational requirements for aerodromes to ensure high emniyet standards.

Record-Breaking Investment Plan by Aena

In addition to this tender, Aena has announced a record investment of €12.9 billion to upgrade Spain’s airport infrastructure between 2027 and 2031. Under this plan, Madrid-Barajas is expected to receive approximately €2.4 billion, while Alicante-Elche will see an investment of over €1 billion for terminal expansion and the construction of a new taxiway.
