Lufthansa Denies Plans to Acquire the Airbus A321XLR

Lufthansa Group has announced that it has no plans to add the Airbus A321XLR to its fleet. While the airline occasionally evaluates different aircraft types, it stated that the A321XLR does not currently fit into its strategic fleet plans.

Internal assessments reportedly examined the A321XLR’s range advantages and operational efficiency. The aircraft is already used on medium- and long-haul routes by airlines such as Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Wizz Air, while American Airlines and United Airlines are preparing to introduce it into their fleets. The A321XLR continues to attract global interest for its ability to connect niche markets with lower financial risk.

Industry sources note that if Lufthansa revisits its decision, the aircraft could potentially be used to reopen certain U.S. routes or introduce new long-range destinations. Lufthansa Group’s fleet includes the A320 family as well as the A330, A340, A350, A380, and Boeing 747 and 787 models. The airline is expecting deliveries of the A350-1000 and 777-9 in the coming years, while gradually retiring some of its older wide-body aircraft.
