U.S. Low-Cost Airlines Seek $2.5 Billion in Government Support

Low-cost airlines operating in the United States have requested $2.5 billion in government support as rising jet fuel prices continue to pressure the sector.

The application, submitted by the Association of Value Airlines, highlights that the sharp increase in fuel costs is putting airline operations at risk. Member airlines including Allegiant Air, Avelo Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines are part of the request.

The group noted that jet fuel prices have nearly doubled since February, largely due to developments linked to Iran.

In addition to direct financial support, the airlines are also calling for the temporary removal of the 7.5% federal ticket tax and the $5.30 per-passenger fee.
