U.S. Airfares Rise 21% in Four Months

According to the latest Consumer Price Index data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, airline ticket prices increased by 20.7% over the past year. The data shows a particularly sharp rise during the first four months of 2026.

The average airfare stood at $255.59 in April 2025, rising to $308.53 by April 2026. This marks a 21.6% increase in ticket prices in the first four months of 2026 alone.

The report noted that higher jet fuel costs following tensions with Iran have directly affected the airline industry. Major U.S. carriers are said to have passed rising costs on to ticket prices.

Meanwhile, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby stated that even if fuel prices decline, the airline aims to retain a significant portion of the current higher fares. Kirby argued that the recent fare increases could become more permanent over the long term.
