Nigeria Aviation Fuel Crisis Could Halt Domestic Flights

Airlines in Nigeria have warned that domestic flights could be suspended from April 20 if prices for Jet A1 aviation fuel are not reduced.

Industry representatives stated that fuel prices have risen from 900 naira per liter at the end of February to 3,300 naira per liter, while airline revenues are no longer sufficient to cover operating costs. Aviation fuel is reported to account for more than 40% of total operating expenses.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria alleged that artificial price increases and supply shortages are affecting the market, while claiming that the country’s only domestic producer is providing limited supply to the local market.

If the crisis continues, major disruptions to domestic air transport across Nigeria are expected.
