Low-Cost Giant Southwest Airlines Considers Boeing 787 Dreamliner

U.S.-based Southwest Airlines is reportedly evaluating Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft as part of potential plans to launch long-haul international flights.

According to Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the matter, the airline is exploring the possibility of adding widebody aircraft to its fleet for the first time. The Boeing 787 has emerged as a leading option in discussions, although no final decision has been made.

Southwest Airlines is reportedly considering a fleet that could include dozens of Boeing 787 aircraft, with discussions focusing on launching long-haul operations within approximately three years. However, the timeline could change depending on aircraft availability.

Due to lengthy delivery backlogs for new Boeing 787 aircraft, the airline is also exploring options to acquire aircraft through leasing companies and the secondhand market.

Reuters also reported that Airbus has been holding discussions with Southwest Airlines, with the A321XLR and A330neo among the alternatives being considered for long-haul operations. Nevertheless, the Boeing 787 is reportedly emerging as the stronger candidate.

Southwest Airlines currently operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet. Introducing widebody aircraft would require changes in several areas, including maintenance, pilot training, regulatory approvals, and labor agreements.

In a statement to Reuters, Southwest Airlines said it had no new fleet plans to announce at this time.
