India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is in talks with Embraer and ATR over the acquisition of new aircraft as it evaluates the future of its regional fleet. The discussions are reportedly still at an early stage, with the aircraft type and potential order size yet to be determined.
IndiGo currently operates 44 ATR 72-600s in its regional fleet. In addition to potentially expanding its turboprop fleet, the airline is also considering Embraer’s E2 family, which offers greater capacity, speed and range. Any new aircraft could complement the existing ATR 72-600 fleet or potentially replace part of it over the longer term.
The regional fleet strategy is also part of IndiGo’s plans to develop Delhi into an international connecting hub. While strengthening its regional network, the airline is preparing to expand its long-haul operations and currently holds firm orders for 60 Airbus A350-900s.
