American Airlines wants to codeshare on Alaska Airlines’ new 787 routes to Europe and Asia. However, the Allied Pilots Association (APA) argues this violates the scope clause in the pilot contract.
APA President Nick Silva said management plans to “ignore the contract.” The current agreement only permits domestic codeshares, not international ones.
Alaska acquired Hawaiian Airlines in 2024, adding four 787s to its fleet, with more on order. The carrier will launch London flights in spring 2026.
APA says placing American’s code on Alaska’s long-haul flights would effectively outsource widebody flying that should be performed by American’s own pilots.
APA spokesman Dennis Tajer stressed, “Scope is a religious issue for pilots,” signaling no compromise on the matter.
