Trump Unveils $22 Billion Transformation Plan for Dulles Airport
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a $22 billion redevelopment plan for Washington Dulles International Airport.
Under the proposal, existing concourses will be renovated or rebuilt, while new boarding gates and a large parking facility will be added. Around 465,000 square metres of airport space is expected to be redeveloped, while the landmark main terminal designed by Eero Saarinen will be preserved.
The airport’s long-criticised mobile lounges, which transport passengers across the apron between terminals, will also be gradually phased out. The project is expected to be financed through municipal bonds, airline contributions and potential public-private partnerships.
Trump described Dulles as being regarded as one of the worst airports in the world and said the project aims to transform it into one of the best.
Dulles handled 29 million passengers in 2025, making it the fastest-growing major airport in the United States by passenger traffic. Around 70% of the airport’s traffic is operated by United Airlines.
