Flydubai Captain’s Intervention Prevented a Potential Disaster
The captain involved in the incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, during which the first officer allegedly attacked the captain and attempted to take control of the aircraft, has been identified as Smit Machchhar.
Despite being injured in the stabbing, Machchhar reportedly continued to intervene and managed to open the cockpit door, allowing other crew members and passengers to assist. Following the captain’s actions, the first officer was restrained and control of the aircraft was regained.
Machchhar, an Indian national who has served as a captain with Flydubai since June 2022, previously worked for SpiceJet for approximately 11 years and has extensive experience operating Boeing 737 aircraft.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 subsequently diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
