Azerbaijan and Russia Reach Agreement on AZAL Crash

Azerbaijan and Russia have reached an agreement on the settlement of the consequences and compensation payments regarding the AZAL plane crash that occurred on December 25, 2024.

According to a joint statement, a consensus was reached in the process conducted regarding the crash of the Embraer 190 aircraft belonging to Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) near the city of Aktau, which resulted from the unintended operation of an air defense system in Russian airspace. In line with the decisions taken during the meeting between the presidents of the two countries in Dushanbe on October 9, 2025, compensation payments for the families of the victims and those affected by the crash have been finalized.

The statement noted that the consequences of the tragedy have been resolved from both legal and financial perspectives. Deep condolences were extended to the relatives of the deceased, and it was stated that the pain of this irreparable loss is shared.
Background

In the crash that occurred 3 kilometers from the city of Aktau on the coast of the Caspian Sea, 38 out of the 67 passengers and crew members on board lost their lives. Following the accident, Russian leader Putin offered his apologies and condolences as the incident took place in Russian airspace. President Aliyev expressed his expectations for the punishment of those responsible and the payment of compensation.
