
Airbus has entered a new phase of its Wing of Tomorrow programme, launching a flight-test campaign to evaluate the performance of high-aspect-ratio wing designs for future single-aisle passenger aircraft.
Over the next three years, Airbus will design, manufacture, and test full-scale wing extensions. The extensions will be installed on an A321neo to assess the aerodynamic performance and handling characteristics of different wing geometries under real flight conditions.
Each extension will measure several metres in length and simulate a folding wing in its fully extended position during flight. Comprehensive instrumentation installed on the wings will allow engineers to analyse how the increased wingspan affects aircraft behaviour, handling, and control characteristics.
Ahead of the flight tests, Airbus is refining the wing designs using advanced digital modelling and wind-tunnel testing. The data collected during the campaign will help validate the performance benefits that longer wings could provide for next-generation aircraft.
The Wing of Tomorrow programme aims to improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce fuel consumption through the development of longer, lighter, and thinner wings.
