Airborne Medical Support Deployed Over Suspected Hantavirus Case

The United Kingdom carried out an air operation following a suspected hantavirus case on Tristan da Cunha, one of the world’s most isolated settlements.

British authorities announced that six paratroopers and two military medical personnel were deployed to the island aboard a Airbus A400M Atlas operated by the Royal Air Force after a British citizen on the island was suspected of having hantavirus.

As the island has no airstrip, oxygen supplies and medical equipment were air-dropped together with personnel. Tristan da Cunha authorities stated that the May 9 mission marked the first emergency medical air resupply operation in the island’s history, with a total of 3.3 tons of aid delivered.
