Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, has raised the possibility of a merger with American Airlines. According to reports cited by Bloomberg and sources familiar with the matter, Kirby has also presented the idea to government officials.
United Airlines and American Airlines are among the largest carriers in the United States by fleet size. A potential merger could create the country’s largest airline, potentially surpassing Delta Air Lines.
The reports have also impacted the markets. American Airlines shares rose by approximately 4.5% in after-hours trading, while United Airlines shares gained around 1.1%.
