Lufthansa Renames “Green Fares” Following Court Ruling

German airline Lufthansa has renamed its “Green Fares” ticket product, designed to support efforts to reduce the environmental impact of air travel, to “Impact Fares.” The change follows a ruling by a German court that found the airline’s advertising claims regarding environmentally friendly flights could mislead passengers.

Lufthansa introduced Green Fares in 2023, allowing passengers to contribute to the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and climate protection projects. However, in March 2025, a German court ruled that claims suggesting passengers could make their flights climate-neutral by paying an additional fee were not sufficiently substantiated.

Following the court ruling becoming legally binding, Lufthansa revised both the product’s name and its marketing approach. Under the new “Impact Fares” name, the product allows passengers to financially support initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of air travel.

Under this fare option, a portion of the ticket price is allocated to supporting the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and climate protection projects. This allows passengers to make a financial contribution to initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact associated with their flights.
