Iran Suspends Flights to Baghdad and Muscat
Iran has announced the suspension of flights to Baghdad and Muscat following the introduction of new US sanctions targeting the country’s aviation sector. According to Al Jazeera, the decision will take effect from midnight on September 23.
Majid Akhavan, spokesperson for Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, said airports in Baghdad and Muscat would no longer accept flights operated by Iranian airlines. Akhavan added that talks were under way to reroute Baghdad-bound flights to Najaf International Airport. Discussions between Iran and Oman over the future of flights between the two countries are also continuing.
Iran’s other international flights are expected to continue according to their existing schedules. According to information reported by ISNA, flights to Istanbul will also continue as planned. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had previously warned that foreign companies providing Iranian airlines with services including fuel, ground handling and ticket sales could face secondary sanctions.
