U.S. Court Orders Boeing to Pay $28.45 Million in Compensation

In the U.S., one of the lawsuits related to the March 2019 crash of Ethiopian Airlines’ Boeing 737 MAX 8 has concluded, with a federal jury in Illinois ruling that Boeing must pay $28.45 million to the family of Shikha Garg, who lost her life in the accident. The aircraft crashed six minutes after taking off from Addis Ababa, killing 157 people.

The court awarded the family $20 million for emotional distress and pain and suffering, along with additional payments. Boeing is also set to make an extra $3.45 million under a previously signed preliminary agreement. Including interest, the total payment reaches $35.8 million.

Boeing reiterated its sorrow over the accidents and noted that most lawsuits were settled through agreements. However, some cases against the company are still ongoing. Earlier this month, a federal judge in Texas also approved the Department of Justice’s decision to close its criminal investigation into Boeing.
