Two Light Aircraft Collide Mid-Air in Sydney | One Pilot Killed
In the southwest of Sydney, Australia, a pilot lost his life after two light aircraft collided mid-air on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred at around 11:50 AM near Napper Field in the Wedderburn area. It was reported that the collision happened during a formation flight involving two Van’s RV-7 light aircraft and two additional aircraft.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) stated that the accident took place as the aircraft were returning to land. One of the planes landed safely, while the other crashed into terrain, resulting in the death of its pilot. Police announced that the two aircraft made contact while in the air and that the crashed aircraft was located in a nearby forested area. The other pilot was reported to be uninjured.
Four safety investigators from the ATSB were dispatched to the scene. The team will conduct mapping work at the accident site, examine the wreckage, and collect necessary components to be taken to technical facilities in Canberra.
As part of the investigation, interviews will be held with other pilots involved in the formation flight, witnesses, and relevant parties. Additionally, air traffic records, flight tracking data, pilot and maintenance records, and meteorological information will be gathered.
