U.S. President Donald Trump has said he is considering a limited military operation against Iran if negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program fail. Speaking to reporters, Trump stated that the option remains on the table should an agreement not be reached.
He previously indicated that it would likely become clear within the next 10 days whether diplomacy would succeed, warning that the United States could take military action otherwise. In recent weeks, Washington has increased its military presence in the region.
The U.S. and its European allies argue that Iran is moving closer to developing a nuclear weapon, an accusation Tehran strongly denies. Officials from both sides have met in Switzerland, and they have reported progress in the talks.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is preparing a draft agreement and plans to submit it in the coming days to U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military buildup has drawn attention. The USS Gerald R. Ford is reportedly heading toward the region, while the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier has also been deployed along with additional destroyers and fighter jets.
Satellite imagery suggests Iran has reinforced some of its military facilities. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has posted messages criticizing the U.S. deployment, describing American warships as dangerous military assets.
Although Trump frequently answers questions from the press, his remarks do not always result in concrete action. He has not specified the exact objective of any potential strike. U.S. officials are said to have presented him with multiple options, including scenarios that could last several weeks.
