• Singapore has decided to acquire the Boeing P-8A Poseidon as its next maritime patrol aircraft. Defense Minister Chan Chun Sing informed U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth of the decision during a Sept. 9 meeting at the Pentagon.
• The Ministry of Defence said four P-8As will be purchased in the first phase, replacing the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s five Fokker 50 patrol aircraft. The new aircraft will enhance Singapore’s maritime situational awareness and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. Future phases of the modernization effort have not yet been detailed.
• In recent years, Singapore has expanded its naval capabilities, ordering six Invincible-class submarines, six multi-role combat vessels, and four offshore patrol vessels, while upgrading its six Formidable-class frigates with Blue Spear anti-ship missiles.
• Given its reliance on maritime trade and its location at the critical junction of the Malacca Strait and South China Sea, Singapore places high priority on maritime security. The Ministry also noted that the first of 20 F-35s for Singapore is under production, with delivery expected by the end of 2026.
