At Brussels Airport, a Scandinavian Airlines Airbus A320-251N mistakenly attempted takeoff from a taxiway instead of the runway. The aircraft accelerated up to 117 knots (220 km/h) on the taxiway, which is normally used only for movements between the terminal and the runway.
Brussels Airport spokesperson Ariane Goossens stated that the takeoff was aborted and emphasized that the taxiway is intended solely for aircraft taxiing. The aircraft came to a stop before reaching a fuel farm located at the end and to the left of the taxiway.
Belgian authorities will conduct a detailed investigation to determine how the incident occurred.
