Qantas Faces $121 Million Penalty Demand as Court Nears Verdict

In Australia, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) has demanded the maximum penalty of 121 million AUD against Qantas for the unlawful dismissal of 1,800 ground staff. The final ruling will be made by Justice Michael Lee following a three-day Federal Court hearing.

Qantas had previously lost all appeals — including one at the High Court — over the COVID-era dismissals, which were found to undermine union rights. The company had already been ordered to pay $120 million in compensation. TWU is now calling for the highest possible penalty to serve as a deterrent.

Qantas HR Chief Catherine Walsh testified that the size of the compensation reflected the airline’s “deep regret.” Payments will begin by the end of May, with a minimum of $10,000 set for each affected worker.

TWU Secretary Michael Kaine criticized Qantas for offering its apology “at the last minute,” suggesting it was aimed at reducing the penalty. Former employees, meanwhile, described the emotional toll of the years-long legal fight and called for justice to finally be delivered.
