MH17 Crash Returns to Putin and Malaysian Leader’s Agenda After 11 Years

During his visit to Moscow, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim raised the issue of the Malaysia Airlines MH17 crash with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The visit came shortly after the UN Aviation Council issued a ruling holding Russia responsible for the 2014 tragedy.

The council found Russia liable for the incident in which 289 people lost their lives, including 196 Dutch, 43 Malaysians, and 38 Australians. The Kremlin rejected the decision, describing it as biased.

In the meeting, Putin expressed condolences to the victims’ families and stressed that the investigation should be thorough, impartial, and free from political influence. He also rejected claims that Russia was evading cooperation, stating they were only open to dialogue with institutions they deemed neutral.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to seeking justice for the victims and ensuring accountability for those responsible.
