Lufthansa is reportedly preparing to implement a limited change within its widebody fleet. The German flag carrier is said to be considering removing two Boeing 747-8 aircraft from its fleet starting in 2026. The aircraft are currently used mainly in Frankfurt-based operations.
According to information from aviation circles, the aircraft expected to be put up for sale are among the youngest 747-8s in the fleet, and the plan is said to be part of a long-term fleet optimization strategy. If the sale goes through, Lufthansa’s number of active 747-8s would decrease; however, it is emphasized that a complete phase-out of the type is not being considered.
What makes the claims particularly noteworthy is the potential buyer. Some sources suggest that the two aircraft could be evaluated by the U.S. Air Force, the world’s largest air force. This possibility is being discussed in connection with delays in the Air Force One program.
No official confirmation has yet been made by either party. The process is expected to take shape in line with fleet and procurement decisions to be finalized in the coming period.
