Lufthansa pilots are preparing to go on strike over changes to the company’s pension system. According to the Vereinigung Cockpit union, 88% of Lufthansa pilots and 96% of Lufthansa Cargo pilots voted in favor of the strike.
The strike vote was launched on September 12 after seven rounds of negotiations with the company ended without an agreement. The pilots are opposing Lufthansa’s new pension model, which reduces retirement benefits. In 2017, the airline replaced guaranteed pension payments with a contribution-based system.
Union President Andreas Pinheiro said the result demonstrates the unity among pilots. Lufthansa has not yet issued a statement regarding the vote. A potential strike is expected to cause significant disruptions to flights across Germany and Europe.
