Lufthansa 787 Faces Business Class Certification Issue

Lufthansa is currently unable to offer the full business class cabin for sale on its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft due to ongoing certification procedures related to its new Allegris cabin concept.

Although the Allegris product is already in commercial service on the Airbus A350-900, the business class seats installed on the 787-9 are manufactured by a different supplier. As a result, regulatory authorities are treating them as a separate product, requiring a new and independent technical certification process for each seat type.

Lufthansa’s strategy of offering five different business class seat options within the same cabin has further complicated the process. Since each variant must be certified individually, only the four front-row Business Suite seats were initially made available for sale when the first 787 entered service at the end of 2025. The remaining premium seats in the cabin were temporarily blocked from sale.

The airline plans to release 25 of the 28 business class seats for sale starting April 15, 2026. However, some seats are expected to remain unavailable until the full certification process is completed. Until then, Lufthansa’s 787 fleet will continue operating without reaching its full premium revenue potential.
