Latvia Temporarily Closes Eastern Airspace

Latvia has decided to temporarily close the airspace near its borders with Russia and Belarus. Defense Minister Andris Sprūds announced that the restriction will take effect on September 11, 2025, at 18:00 local time and remain in place for at least one week.

Sprūds stated that the measure, taken as part of the Namejs 2025 national defense exercise, will ensure more effective airspace control and support NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission as well as military testing activities.

Commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces Kaspars Pudāns said the decision followed recent Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace and forms part of broader security measures. He added that the closure would facilitate the redirection of civilian flights and enable faster responses to potential threats.
