KLM has announced that stocks of aircraft de-icing fluid at Schiphol Airport are under pressure due to ongoing winter conditions. The airline stated that heavy consumption has led to supply disruptions and that the current supplier is unable to keep up with the increased demand.
According to KLM, de-icing fluid is delivered daily; however, the combination of extreme weather conditions and logistical delays is causing stocks to be depleted faster than expected. The company noted that the supplier cannot currently provide certainty regarding the replenishment of the fluid coming from Germany. It was emphasized that the issue is not limited to the Netherlands but is being experienced across Europe.
To prevent potential shortages, KLM announced that it has begun sourcing the fluid from Germany using its own resources.
Aircraft de-icing is not only a time-consuming process but also a highly costly one. For widebody aircraft, for example, the cost of a single de-icing operation for an Airbus A330 can reach up to approximately €8,000.
