Jet Fuel Crisis Escalates

Jet Fuel Crisis Escalates: Frankfurt and 5 Major Airports at High Risk

Frankfurt, along with Delhi, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Manila, and Melbourne, has been categorized as “high risk” regarding jet fuel supply as of April. It is reported that these airports are preparing to declare a jet fuel supply emergency for airlines due to increasing shortages fueled by the ongoing conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran.

The fuel supply chain is under significant pressure, particularly at major hubs in Asia and Europe. Consequently, some airlines are reportedly making plans to carry extra fuel for return flights (“tankering”). Carriers based in Manila are already struggling to secure fuel at certain destinations, and Philippine authorities have stated that the grounding of aircraft is a “real possibility.”

Since the onset of the conflict, jet fuel prices in the industry have nearly doubled. Many airlines have begun implementing fuel surcharges and reducing capacity on certain routes. This cost pressure has become especially pronounced for flights departing from Hong Kong, India, and Southeast Asia.
