Iraqi Airways has made significant progress toward regaining access to European Union (EU) airspace. During the Iraq Transport, Logistics & Airports Exhibition & Conference (ITL Expo 2025) held in Baghdad, officials announced that the country’s efforts to modernize its aviation sector are showing results. Iraq’s Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibis, stated that Iraq now meets 78% of the EU’s safety and compliance criteria established in 2015 — a clear sign that the national carrier is approaching the final stages of the reinstatement process.
In recent years, the national flag carrier has taken major steps toward aligning with international standards by renewing its fleet. Through agreements with Boeing and Airbus, more than 10 new aircraft have joined the fleet, bringing the total number of active planes to over 40. The airline aims to expand its fleet to 53 aircraft by 2027, with additional investments in maintenance, operations, and training infrastructure.
Once the EU ban is lifted, Iraqi Airways is expected to resume flights to Europe. The airline plans to relaunch services to former destinations such as London, Frankfurt, and Stockholm, while also expanding its Asian and Middle Eastern routes to strengthen its regional network. Officials hope the final approval will be granted by 2026 following the completion of EU inspections.
Iraqi Airways’ return to Europe is seen as a milestone not only for the airline’s restructuring but also for Iraq’s broader efforts to rebuild its aviation reputation internationally. Experts believe the development will accelerate the country’s aviation modernization goals and enhance Iraq’s position in regional air transport competition.
