IATA: Air Cargo Will Maintain Its Critical Role in Global Trade in 2026

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that global air cargo volumes are expected to reach 71.6 million tons in 2026. During the same period, airlines are projected to carry 5.2 billion passengers and achieve a load factor of 83.8%.

According to IATA data, while the sector continues to grow, it will face pressures related to costs and sustainability. As part of aviation’s decarbonization goals, SAF investments totaling USD 4.5 billion are planned for 2026.

The increase in air cargo demand in the last quarter of 2025 emerged as a key factor supporting the 2026 projections. Growth was driven by intra-Asia, Middle East–Europe, and Europe–Asia routes, while a weak outlook persisted on the Asia–North America route due to trade policies.

On a regional basis, Africa recorded the highest growth, while Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe maintained positive momentum. Declines were observed in North America and Latin America.

IATA emphasized that demand imbalances, rising costs, and volatility in fuel prices will be key factors shaping air cargo planning in 2026.
