Miracle on the Hudson: Aviation History Rescue Anniversary

Anniversary of the “Miracle on the Hudson”: A Rescue That Made Aviation History

Today marks the anniversary of the event known in aviation history as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, lost both of its engines after encountering a flock of birds shortly after takeoff.

With every second critical for the 155 passengers and crew on board, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles prevented a major disaster by successfully ditching the aircraft in the Hudson River.

Ending with zero fatalities and later portrayed in films, the incident continues to be remembered years later as one of the most striking examples of exceptional experience and crisis management in aviation.
