Grupo Abra — the parent company of Avianca, GOL Linhas Aéreas, and Wamos Air — has signed a major agreement with Airbus to expand its fleet. The group placed an order for 50 A320neo aircraft and will add up to 7 A330-900 widebodies through leasing arrangements. This move reflects Grupo Abra’s strategy to strengthen its position in the Latin American market and increase its presence on transatlantic routes.
It remains unclear which airline within the group will operate the new A330-900s. However, Avianca — which already operates widebody aircraft — is considered the leading candidate. Meanwhile, GOL Linhas Aéreas, which currently operates only narrowbody Boeing 737s, may also take on some of these aircraft.
In a statement to investors, GOL confirmed it will acquire five A330-900s through leasing company Avolon, with two additional options. The airline added that the final allocation of the aircraft among group members will depend on operational and financial requirements.
Avianca, on the other hand, plans to take delivery of its first A320neo featuring Airbus’s Airspace cabin design in 2025. The Colombian carrier already operates 36 A320neo aircraft in its fleet.
With this expansion, Grupo Abra is taking another step toward becoming one of Latin America’s most powerful aviation groups.
