Fuel Shortage Halts Russian Cuba Flights

Russian carriers including Rossiya (part of the Aeroflot Group) and Nordwind Airlines have announced the temporary suspension of their scheduled flights to Cuba due to a critical shortage of aviation fuel on the island. The decision was made after Cuban authorities informed international airlines that they will be unable to provide jet fuel at airports such as Havana and Varadero amid an ongoing energy crisis.

Rossiya will operate only return flights from Havana and Varadero to Moscow in the coming days to evacuate Russian tourists currently in Cuba, after which its flight program will be temporarily halted until conditions improve. Nordwind has also adjusted its schedule and is expected to suspend regular operations under similar constraints.

The fuel supply issues in Cuba stem from broader shortages affecting the country’s energy infrastructure, which have been exacerbated by external pressures and disruptions to oil deliveries.

Similar measures have also impacted other international airlines, including Canadian carriers that have canceled or modified services for the same reason.
