European Giants Expand Airspace and Base Embargo Against Trump

As the Iran war initiated by the USA and Israel enters its 32nd day, the Trump administration has faced consecutive logistical setbacks from Europe’s major powers. Following Spain, France and Italy have also restricted access for American military aircraft.
Decisive Move from France: Airspace Closed
France has officially denied airspace access to U.S. aircraft carrying military supplies to Israel and participating in Middle East operations. This decision was confirmed by Trump himself via social media, where the U.S. President reacted sharply to the French position. Trump openly threatened his ally, stating, “The U.S. will remember this.”
Crisis at Sigonella Base in Italy
On the Italian front, a crisis erupted regarding the Sigonella Base in Sicily. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto rejected flight plans submitted while aircraft were already airborne, citing that they fell outside the scope of existing bilateral agreements. Italian authorities emphasized that these flights exceeded the limits of normal logistical activities and were directly related to combat operations.
Meloni: “We Do Not Want to Enter the War”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani have underscored that the country will not be a party to this war. Meloni stated that the use of bases for active combat activities, such as bombing runs, is only possible with parliamentary approval, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining regional emniyet.
Unified Stance from Europe’s “Big Five”
The “Big Five” of Europe—the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy—have withheld the logistical and military support Trump expected for his Iran strategy. This process, which began with Spain closing the Rota and Moron de la Frontera bases, has significantly restricted the U.S. military’s operational capacity across Europe following the latest moves by France and Italy.
